GARRETT HACK: European Teaching Update

By | December 14, 2015

W Dean Tables 25-9-2015 Garrett Hack recently returned from two teaching stints in Europe and we are delighted to share photos of some very happy students and a beaming teacher!

Garrett reports:

‘West Dean College in West Sussex, UK, educates the next generation of curators and conservators in ceramics, furniture, metals, clocks, tapestries.  I have been teaching here every couple of years for about a decade.

An amazing school set on 6,000 acres — a huge estate with walled gardens (12 acres), arboretum, forests, that offers an array of courses from one day to several years.

My 10 students wanted to learn more about hand tools and design, and all 10 completed their tables in five days. Each is unique.

IMG_0906My other class was in Munich, Germany, and run by DICTUM, where I have taught for the past six years. Students come from as far away as Croatia, Austria, Norway, Hungary, Spain.

We built a small cabinet with a solid wood back, shelves, moldings, doors partially completed, and drawers to come.’

Interesting to note the subtle differences in each students’ designs.  Garrett has liberated his students to find their voice in this project and future work to come.

The Furniture Masters and the New Hampshire Institute of Furniture Making’s mission is to educate others on the art of fine furniture making.  Garrett’s willingness to share his craft ensures his knowledge continues with the next generation of makers and beyond.

Great job, Garrett!  We’ll keep you informed of Garrett’s future class schedule!  Perhaps a class in Europe will be in your future . . .
