‘West Dean College in West Sussex, UK, educates the next generation of curators and conservators in ceramics, furniture, metals, clocks, tapestries. I have been teaching here every couple of years for about a decade.
An amazing school set on 6,000 acres — a huge estate with walled gardens (12 acres), arboretum, forests, that offers an array of courses from one day to several years.
My 10 students wanted to learn more about hand tools and design, and all 10 completed their tables in five days. Each is unique.
We built a small cabinet with a solid wood back, shelves, moldings, doors partially completed, and drawers to come.’
Interesting to note the subtle differences in each students’ designs. Garrett has liberated his students to find their voice in this project and future work to come.
The Furniture Masters and the New Hampshire Institute of Furniture Making’s mission is to educate others on the art of fine furniture making. Garrett’s willingness to share his craft ensures his knowledge continues with the next generation of makers and beyond.
